Foolproof Apple Crumble

foolproof apple crumble

I have lost count of the number of apple crumble recipes I have tried that have been a complete disaster! This is my simple and cheap recipe that has been a hit with all the family. You can add different types of fruit if you wish, my favourite is frozen mixed berries.

The most important question is, do you have it with custard or ice cream?!

Serves 6-8

4-5 large Bramley apples, peeled and cubed

75g caster sugar

2 tsp ground cinnamon

175g rolled oats

250g plain flour

175g butter, soft and cubed

100g brown sugar

  1. Preheat the oven to 180C. In a deep oven proof dish, mix together the cubed apples, caster sugar and cinnamon until the apples are evenly covered.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, add the flour, oats, brown sugar and rub the butter into the mix until it forms into crumb.
  3. Evenly scatter the crumbs on top of the apples in the oven proof dish. Place into the preheated oven for 35-40 minutes or until the top is golden brown.

  1. Looks delicious! My mum makes a brilliant apple crumble. Used to get apples from my in-laws garden but they have moved now which is a shame. #passthesauce

  2. This sounds (and looks) delicious! You’re right, I’ve tried lots of different recipes too and not all of them have been what they’re cracked up to be! #passthesauce

  4. Yum that looks so delicious! It’s raining on Dartmoor today so this puts me in the mood for a crumble…I haven’t used oats as a topping before that’s a great idea. Lovely to meet you the other day too! #bigpinklink

  5. I like mine with cream!! I’d take ice cream as a second choice though!! Apple crumble was always my absolute favourite as a child-my mum used to make a really mean one! I must start making it for my children, so this recipe seems the perfect way to get started! Thanks for sharing with #bigpinklink!

  6. Have you ever thought about cooking the crumble topping separately then sprinkling on top of Apple? I have done this before and it is lovely 🙂
